10. You
Publish, Then We
Publish
Thay Yang was only eighteen when we produced
and promoted his first book, Exotic Paper
Airplanes. The book sold well, but the young
author did not like the business side of being a
publisher, so we purchased the rights to his book
and contracted with Thay to publish a second book,
Exquisite Interceptors, on a royalty
basis.

Jerome Washington self-published several books
which he sold at readings, but he couldn't afford
to advertise or promote his work. We contracted to
publish his next book and entered the manuscript in
several competitions. Iron House won the
1994 Western States Arts Federation Award for
Creative Nonfiction and garnered impressive reviews
in Publishers Weekly and other national
publications.
