11. You Publish, Then We Cheer
Sometimes we play only a minor role in a book's success. We encouraged Robert Schneider, the bestselling editor of The Open Hand Cookbook: Great Chefs Cook for Friends (Simon & Schuster) and helped prepare market strategies for his new book, Quantity Cooking with Fresh Foods.

We evaluated Kent Harrington's work and were impressed with Dark Ride, though it had been turned down by many publishers. We convinced him to persevere, introduced him to a Hollywood agent, and our faith in Kent was rewarded when William Morris sold it to St. Martin's. We expect to see Kent's name on the bestseller list one of these days.

"It is true what they say about this business: it's impersonal, obsessed with money, etc., but there are a few people left like yourself who really care about literature. Anyway, Wm. Morris sold Dark Ride to St Martin's. It will be released both in paper and hardback, so I guess they like it. You said I was going to make it, but I had stopped believing and was running on fumes. Thank you for all your encouragement and good advice. I'll never forget it."

- Kent Harrington, San Rafael, Calif.
