You may think that all editors do is send out
rejection notices and take authors to lunch, but
there's quite a bit more to it than that. While
it's true that our editors turn down books that are
pornographic or that promote hatred, they spend
most of their time making good books better. It
starts with a thoroughgoing evaluation of a book's
sales potential, continues with developmental and
line editing, and concludes with careful proofing.
You call the shots, of course, and although we'll
point out, for example, that "all right" consists
of two words, if you insist upon "alright," that's
the way it will appear.
