The Publishing Process

Project Coordination

After a contract has been signed to publish your book, a project coordinator will be assigned to oversee the process. The first hour of phone and mail consultation is provided without charge; additional consultation time, if desired, is billed at $75 per hour with staff ($150 per hour with the president or senior editor).

Evaluation and Editing

If you haven't prepared a marketing plan or had your book professionally critiqued, we offer a thorough and professional evaluation for $150 (under 100,000 words; $300 for books over 100,000 words) . We'll provide a detailed, multi-page analysis of your book's content, structure and sales potential that can save you time and money while pinpointing problem areas. If we think that your book needs editing, we'll supply a free sample edit of a page or two along with a bid to edit the rest. If this appeals to you, please send your manuscript and payment (along with return postage), allowing 4-6 weeks for our report. You may send your manuscript on disk; we'll print out a hard copy for an additional charge of $.15 per page and return the printout with the evaluation.

Pre-Press

If your book is not camera-ready (see camera-ready requirements), we will provide page samples, professional page and book design, light editing, 1200/2540 dpi typesetting, and make-up to camera-ready (includes author's proofing copy): $1000 to $1500.

Preliminary cover sketches cost $75 each. Finished full-color cover design ranges in price from $400 to $1500, depending on complexity and medium. We can scan your photos or artwork or provide high quality interior illustrations, maps, charts, indexing, etc. We can train you to complete necessary publishing forms or file them for you. The forms relevant to your project and other publishing practices will be discussed in personal consultation with you.

Complete book publishing costs are the sum of pre-press, printing, shipping and freight charges. If books are to be promoted to the trade, a marketing and promotion budget should be allocated. We recommend you spend as much to promote your book as you do in printing it.

Here are some of the promotional services we offer. We can:
* Promote and sell your book in our catalog (30,000 copies distributed annually) and at our website
* Write press releases and reviews
* Create press kits and produce posters, flyers, order forms, book displays, etc.
* Prepare pre-publication review copies
* Mail books and promotional materials to reviewers and follow-up with personal phone calls
* Obtain permissions and secure blurbs
* Conduct database research and prepare bulk mail (up to 40,000 pieces)
* Contract with distributors to carry your book
* Represent your book at conferences and trade shows
* Handle subsidiary and foreign rights, including audio, video, book club, and film rights
* Schedule radio and television interviews and book signing tours
* Coordinate advertising, premium, and direct mail campaigns
* Arrange press conferences and book parties
* Warehouse your books, insuring them against loss
* Conduct telemarketing and toll-free order taking
* And much more

What's the next step? To get started, just let us know which services you'd like us to provide. Typically, it takes four to six weeks from when a project is scheduled to when work begins. If you are fighting a deadline, enclose a refundable deposit of $250. Then, by the time a contract is signed, we'll be ready to start work on your book. Of course, if the contract does not meet with your full approval, your deposit will be cheerfully refunded.
